58th Annual Scientific Meeting
of the Polish Chemical Society
Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Colleagues,
The 58th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Polish Chemical Society will take place in Gdańsk on the twenty-first to the twenty-fifth of September 2015. We expect over 1000 participants for this event – the largest meeting of the community of Polish chemists from all over Poland as well as a significant number of foreign guests.
The organization of the conference has a particular dimension. The thousand-year-old City of Gdańsk has been well-known for a long time for its fondness for freedom and civil liberties and - due to its prosperity and the wisdom of its stewards – it has also been well-known for supporting the development of science and culture. Over the centuries, there have been many well-known figures in the fields of science and culture who have benefited from these liberties - towering luminaries such as Jan Heweliusz, Daniel Fahrenheit, Daniel Chodowiecki, Arthur Schopenhauer and many other excellent scientists and artists from Gdańsk. In the history of Gdańsk there have also been several critical historic events, which undoubtedly have influenced the course of European history; from the era of the Hanseatic League, through the tragic events of the Second World War which started here, and right up to the world-famous ‘SOLIDARITY’ movement which was born in the shipyards of Gdańsk and brought the victory of democracy to millions of people living in this part of our continent.
Today Gdańsk is a resiliently developing modern city of science and culture, and an attractive tourist centre, boldly competing with the most modern European cities. One thing however has remained unchanged – there is no Gdańsk without freedom. Courage, vigour - but above all freedom. This is the Gdańsk of today - and such is its science and culture. Therefore our intention is that the 58th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Polish Chemical Society will be engraved with the sentiment Polish Chemistry in The City of Freedom. This is freedom understood through the prism of the history and experience of Gdańsk, a city which stands as a symbol of wisdom, liberty of thought and expression and of courage. Because these notions are not only the components that have made Gdańsk what it is today – they also happen to be the most important features of modern science too.
The organization of the 58th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Polish Chemical Society, the largest scientific meeting of Polish chemists, will give a great opportunity for the exchange of ideas, the fruitful discussions of experts from various scientific and academic institutions and the representatives of the chemical industry, and also for chemistry teachers and students.
But, in addition, we sincerely hope that this event and its participants will gain from it having a particularly Gdańsk dimension – the meeting of the Polish Chemistry in The City of Freedom!
We are looking forward to seeing you in Gdańsk,
